Time Is Running Out for Your YDC Settlement in New Hampshire

LegalPI

If you were sexually abused during your time at New Hampshire’s Youth Development Center, you could be eligible for compensation through the YDC Claims Administration Fund. But time is running out as the fund will stop accepting claims on December 31, 2024. If you don’t act quickly, you could miss out on this opportunity for justice, closure, and financial support. But how exactly do these claims work? When does the deadline expire? What exactly do you need to do in order to successfully make a claim– and how much could you receive? Let’s find out:

YDC Sex Abuse Claims Explained

Recently, a pattern of sexual abuse and systematic cover up by the state was revealed at the Youth Development Center and other youth detention centers in New Hampshire. While many of the assaults occurred decades ago, many of the adult survivors  still carry with them the memories and trauma of these experiences. It goes without saying that these incidents are completely inexcusable, especially since this was a government-run organization tasked with housing at-risk children.

How Much Money Could You Receive?

New Hampshire has set aside $100 million for victims of YDC sexual abuse. The settlement amounts available per survivor are capped at $1,500,000.00 for survivors of sexual abuse and $150,000.00 for victims of physical abuse. The law creating the fund lays out a matrix for determining the potential value of each survivor’s claims based on a variety of factors including the frequency of the assaults, the type of assault, and for how long the survivor was subjected to abuse by YDC staff.

Why Is There a Time Limit?

There is a strict time limit in place for YDC sexual abuse survivors who wish to participate in the claims fund process. According to the YDC Settlement Process, you must file your claim between January 1st of 2023 and December 31st of 2024. This timeline was established by the New Hampshire state legislature when they created the fund.
